Zippy Introduced as a Top Three Player in the State

Zippy Broughton was honored at the Renaissance Hotel by the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) as being one of the top three basketball players in 7A.  Lee has now had back-to-back honoree’s with Tykeria Williams also receiving the honor last year.  It has been mentioned that the streak should continue as Broughton is only a junior and should not only be in the running for 7A Player of the Year but possibly a candidate for Ms. Basketball.

Zippy saw her responsibilities grow this year into a leader on her team and did not shy away from stepping into the role.  She immediately set a school record with a 41 point performance while keeping her teammates engaged in the game.  Her 41 point outburst was followed later in the year with a 43 point night against number one 5A Charles Henderson who boasted a top three player of the year and a Fantastic Five player in the state.  As many of you know we often question how things work.  You defeat a team with a player receiving all of the accolades and drop 43 in the effort but cannot out ballot them by a majority of people who have never seen you play, including a local press that does not cover basketball.  On that same thought the reporter excitedly asks a coach if he needed to set up a home-and-home with apparently one of his “teams”.  To refute his belief, the Lady Generals had the 4th or 5th toughest schedule according to some publications prior to playing required teams the beginning of January.  In fact they accepted games as fill-ins at tournaments when not even asking who the opponents were.  Sorry just a thought, similar to an All-metro mention of a player who’s school didn’t supply any information, statistics, or support to the people putting the team together.

When asked after the ceremony of her plans for her senior year Zippy responded that she realizes that she will continue the need to lead a young team and looks forward to her continued recruitment which has now grown to a list of almost twenty top colleges.  She has many on Ann Street looking forward to the 2017 – 2018 season.
