Beginning in September college basketball coaches were allowed to start contacting high school juniors. Our very own Zipporah (Zippy) Broughton found that there were more than a few coaches waiting for the opportunity to find out where 225 Ann Street was located. Early on September 1st Zippy’s phone began blowing up. Florida State, Michigan State, Alabama, Auburn, UAB, Florida, Missouri, and LSU are just a few of the schools showing early interest in one of the most athletic basketball players in the state.
Broughton brought plenty of excitement to the Lee gymnasium as a sophomore and showed marked improvement over the summer in her leadership and constant desire to improve her skills and she already had plenty of that. Lee basketball
fans should plan on adjusting their schedules because you miss a game, you’re sure to miss a highlight that your friends will not do justice when explaining.
It would be an absolute misstep not to mention an equally important reason these schools are beating on the doors. Zippy is a very young student-athlete with very specific goals, academic and athletic. She knows what she wants out of a school (college) and has been preparing for her goals since she arrived at Lee. Because of her insistence on taking AP classes it is difficult to get her all of the extra classes she desires. What does Broughton do about this? Accept her goals will not be reached? No. Shrug her shoulders, duck her head, and say “Oh well.”? No. She asks for and accepts online electives that colleges either require or desire. College deans may be the only people on campus that like her more than her coaches.
Believe what you want but great things are happening on Ann Street. Congratulations Zippy!
Just another great day to be a General.
