Following a night when both the Generals and Lady Generals had wrapped up area championships, it would not be unusual for both teams to have a let down when travelling to Carver for a triple header. While both teams had to overcome early slow starts, the Lee teams settled down to take a three game sweep back to Ann Street.
In what might have been one of the better games of the year, the undefeated Generals JV dug themselves by far the biggest hole they have faced this year. Trailing by ten with about three and a half minutes to play the young Generals changed gears and several three’s, steals, and a couple of and one’s later and the JV had completed a comeback that saw them improve to 15 and 0 for the season. For those Generals fans that arrive late for the three games have missed a team that is truly enjoyable to watch. Much like the varsity, Coach Scott takes whatever players he has on a given night and finds a way to compete. Here’s hoping they can find one more next Friday versus a rematch with Carver.
Next up were the Jekyll and Hyde Lady Generals. There was a saying about a young girl with a curl right in the middle of her forehead, when she was good she was very, very good. But when she was bad she was awful. The Lady Generals can pull that act off in just one possession! Friday night was no exception. The Lady Generals spit and sputtered for the first half before dropping 20 points in the third quarter and taking care of business 53 – 50. The Lady Generals were led by Zippy Broughton with 20 points, seven rebounds, five blocks, and two steals. Jada Pickett added eight rebounds and Faith Fantroy contributed eight points. The #9 ranked Lady Generals will have a week off before closing the
season next Friday against the same Lady Wolverines.
In the final match of the night, which was postponed from earlier in the year because Carver
had a problem missing players on football visits (more on that in a later article), the Generals went off in the second half to complete the sweep 82 – 75. Jon’Datric Butler led the Generals with 21 points, 14 in the second half, 14 from Demond Robinson, Henry Ruggs III with 12, 11 in the second half, Quinterrius Rivers and Lakeldrick Gardner added 11 and 10 each. Ruggs III and Kurtis Irvin, Jr. added six assists each and Robinson rejected four Carver shots. The win moved the #4 ranked Generals to 25 and 2 on the season. They will face the #1 ranked Hoover Bucs at Faulkner on Saturday.
Everyday is a great day to be a General.
