With the 2016 – 2017 school year coming to a close it is exciting to see the landing spots of many of our student-athletes. To date there have been 70 offers to 14 different athletes. Most have signed the dotted line while other are weighing their options.
It is no news that Henry Ruggs III was the headline of the 2017 class. He pulled in 20 offers from all over the country for his football skills. He cut the list early to Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, and Penn State. According to some sources Spring Hill College was a close sixth choice. It was no secret the the Seminoles and Tide had inside position. In an emotional acceptance ceremony, Henry turned from the grave site of his best friend and inspiration, Rod Scott, to reveal a Crimson Tide hat as his choice. Joining Henry was Marquis “Bubba” Johnson (Troy), Sam Williams (Northeast CC).
DJ Rudolph (Sterling), Willie Joe Williams (Sterling), Cordez Bryant (Sterling) and Micheal Huntley (Lane College). DJ Patterson accepted and offer from Jackson State that may include both football and baseball and LaKeldrick Gardner will be attending Dodge City Community College.
Joining the football players on the basketball side was Lady General De’Asia Marsh who received six offers and ultimately chose the University of Montevallo for its proximity to home and the welcome feel she felt on her visit. She is the definition of hard work does pay off.
That turns the page to the class of 2018. If the initial start is any indication the early interest could create much excitement for the upcoming season. JaKorey Hawkins is drawing early interest from a host of schools. After posting a 4.38 40 at the Rivals Speed Combine the list grew rapidly. Ball State, East Carolina, Georgia Southern, UMass, Mizzou, Ole Miss, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Florida Atlantic, Toledo, Troy, Tulane, UAB, and West Virginia have all made offers. He is receiving interest from Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Kentucky, LSU. The list is sure to grow from here. Kevontae Ruggs is also seeing early attention with offers from Ole Miss, Alabama, Florida Atlantic, Western Kentucky, South Alabama, and West Virginia.
Cam Hill has picked up an offer from Tennessee State and rumors are there are more heading his way also.
On the basketball side Lady General 7A All-state guard Zipporah “Zippy” Broughton has had contact from a list of top twenty schools. Being 1st team All-state, finalist for 7A Player of the Year and Ms. Basketball has garnered her much attention from everyone but her own high school peers. Her summer activity with one of the best AAU teams in the country has only enhanced her skills as a guard and a leader on the floor.
Schools who have offered Zippy include Michigan State, Florida State, Ole Miss, UAB, Kansas State, Georgetown, Michigan, and Alabama. Others showing interest are Georgia Tech, Auburn, Arizona, Georgia, UCLA,Oklahoma, Kentucky, Florida, Missouri, and LSU. It would be a mistake to not point out that all of these schools are not only interested in her athletics but certainly her academics as well (4.0+ GPA). Again, quite an impressive list that would be hard to match by any rising senior from Mobile to Huntsville.
Lee congratulates the Class of 2017 and look forward to a few more signing in the next few weeks. To the Class of 2018, you’re off to an impressive start and we look forward to each of our student-athletes excelling in the upcoming year.
